Hi Guys,

I’ve always worried about bird strikes especially when flying during the spring/fall bird migrations up here in Canada but hitting a deer while in the air seemed like long odds.

Anyway, we are all fine and no major damage to the plane.

You need to build a deer stencil and put a silhouette on your door.  Seriously! On Oct 22, 2010 12:40 PM, "Perry Casson" <pcasson(at)sasktel.net (pcasson(at)sasktel.net)> wrote:> Hi Guys,

I almost hit a deer right after takeoff in a citation. Glad you are ok.

I hope you at least have the venison in the freezer, offsetting to a small extent the cost of repairs!

May be more common than you would think. We did the same thing just over a year ago in our Maule.

Ironically, we had taken off from a coastal NC airport late in the day where there was a herd of deer grazing on the grass runway as we departed on the hard surface. Returning to our home strip at dusk, I was particularly focused on spotting any deer. Though I've been flying off this strip for 10+ years and made 100s of dusk and night landings, I've never seen a deer when flying.

Deep in the flare we suddenly got a thump and a yaw. Touching down we looked at each other and I said "Turtle?" Couldn't imagine what had happened.

We walk back to see. Our neighbor joined with tractor and it's headlights. A 2 point buck burst open from impact with the left wheel. There was also a small cut in the flesh above 1 eye and a blood spot on one prop blade.

We treated it like a possible prop strike but no evidence of one beyond the blood and the cut. Clearly the wheel took a direct hit but I've done worse without hitting anything.

Fortunately the Maule doesn't have fancy pants or anything so while I was down for awhile having things evaluated, nothing had happened except to the deer.

I still haven't seen a deer on the runway while flying.
