Anyone out there use vinyl instead of paint for stripes or other swooshes on your aircraft paint scheme?

I talked to the guys that do it at OSH a couple of years ago.
I had a C182 with Vinyl stripes and they held up well and did not discolor, so I had a good experience with the Vinyl.
I looked long and hard at the vinyl schemes before deciding to just do a 3 color paint job on my plane. Reasons - 1) It was not particularly cheap about $2000 over a base white paint job. 2) It is definitely not as permanent as paint even if it does hold up well 3)The price for a second or third color from a good paint shop is about the same 4)The shaded letters that you can get from a professional paint job looks a lot better than vinyl letters - mine done by Kracon in Lincoln CA are awesome.

I have a 1/4" silver tape stripe dividing the large white and yellow
sections on my plane.
It was something I hadn't planned on and ended up getting from the
auto parts store at the last minute. The dark dividing line between
the yellow and white made a huge difference in how well each stands
out.
It's held up perfectly for 3+years, except for one small section on
the cowl that gets a lot of hand contact and direct air flow from the
the slipstream. I've had to replace that piece a few times.

Everytime I've seen vinyl used on aircraft, especially if sitting outside, it faded to obvilion. Having said that I haven't any experience with it in at least 5 years, materials may have improved.

Hmmmm........
Certainly does sound like the vinyl you're talking about must be tough stuff. I'm far from an expert on vinyl, so I'm thinking the last A/C I saw with it, must have used an inferior product. The paint was certainly in a lot better shape than the vinyl used as an acent colour.
All I know is my -10 will be all paint.

Is all Vinyl created equal or are some suppliers better than others?

Heck if someone wanted my recommendation for a plane purchase and said it had to live outside I would not recommend a Vans aircraft. One last word on vinyl. Since the original request was about stripes I wanted to mention that not all stripes are the same. If someone were to adhere thin vinyl stripes on a plane the chances of pealing or sagging is a heck of a lot greater than placing a wide meaty stripe on that has significantly more adhesive surface area. Something like a Stars & Bars sticker is not going anywhere once it has cured on the metallic surface. If someone were to place a large #8 on their tail it would probably stay in place and give the owner no issues for a long time but if the owner had an #8 printed on a large round circle say like a Billiard 8 Ball graphic that baby is not going to be an issue for a decade.

Another comment or two on vinyl. I have vinyl stripes and logo on my Pietenpol Air Camper, and am very happy with it. Of course a Pietenpol’s Mach 0.17 speed doesn’t subject the vinyl to the speeds an RV-10 will, but it is remarkably durable. However, you cannot do any graphics that require a sharp point, particularly at the front. If your paint scheme requires a sharp point on the front edge of a stripe, in vinyl it will be more like a .25” radius.
Having said that, if you do choose vinyl, I highly recommend Denny Demeter at Av/Grafix (http://avgrafix.com/) . He did a superb job and his products are top notch. If you look at the picture second from the right on his homepage, you can see my Pietenpol, and the way the tips of the “spear” on the side of the fuselage are rounded.

the vinyl offered today varies from essentially junk to products that will last outdoors for up to 12 years (if not more). I’ve been using the oracal stuff for many years. it’s a very common brand and should
be available to any graphics company. you could always buy your own (ebay) and supply the guy cutting the vinyl for you to ensure you get exactly what you want. I usually use the oracal 651,
which is a medium quality/price material that really works well. the Cadillac is the 951 film, a bit more money but really bulletproof. (not literally  heres a link so you can research it.

If you do end up with a narrow point in the front, a little dab of clear paint will keep it nailed down. I've used clear Krylon applied with a Q-tip with excellent results.

I am sure not all vinyl is created equal (not even close). I would start by asking some of the large companies that print and adhere vinyl on trucks and tour busses. We hired a company out of Canada to do the tour bus and mobile stage. That was 7 or 8 years ago. As a suggestion look for a supplier that offers the perforated vinyl. Perforated vinyl is typically used for window applications. I would suspect any company that makes the perforated vinyl is probably a serious vendor in the marketplace. From there I would review their solid vinyl offerings.
