Is anyone interested in using their RV-10 for aerial photography or remote sensing? We’re now customizing our cargo pods with camera holes, equipment racks and other features to accommodate a variety of payloads. The entire pod may be attached/removed in 30 seconds so you can quickly reconfigure the airframe for work or play.

Payloads: EO/IR, Laser Scanners, LADAR, Aux Fuel, Speakers, Radio Repeaters, Etc.

Applications: Aerial Photography, Security, Atmospheric Research, Pipe Survey, Forestry Services, etc.

Re: the "work" part. Surprisingly, it's illegal for us to
do any "work" in our experimentals. Even flying for the
purpose of selling aerial photos would be illegal, since
we're not allowed to operate commercially.

Section 91.319 makes it clear that we can't "carrying persons or property for compensation or hire." This would clearly prevent us from carrying a paying photographer but it doesn't necessarily stop us from taking pictures ourselves.

Amateur-built aircraft are regularly used for paying air show performances, skywriting, aerial photography, etc. A handful of law enforcement agencies use them for aerial surveillance. These applications don't carry any persons or property for hire and there is no clear ruling against them. Admittedly, the FARs are a little vague in this area and we leave their interpretation up to the customer.

In other instances, it is appropriate to convert the airworthiness certificate to another experimental category. For example, one of our customers will be using an RV-10 to evaluate a new type of sensor they are working on. They will be switching to the "Research and Development" category.

Actually air to ground photography is called out in the regs as NOT flying for hire.
