proverbial horse manure hit the fan. He had to go get a CT scan to
prove he was stone free. Since there was no current medical malady,
this was not covered under insurance. He then had to go to a Urologist
and get a signed statement saying he was "totally stone free", and this
was no simple matter either. This gent had ONE kidney stone in his
entire life... after spending a year in Desert Storm by the way.
Imagine that.
It gets worse.
Every time that same gent went for a medical after that, the "Doc"
wanted the same procedures repeated.

Yeah. That can be a problem and kidney stones are one of the worst. So this should be a warning to never, EVER have a kidney stone. Make sure you never have anything wrong that the FAA will give you grief over. But you can be preemptive in some cases. It can be pricy but perhaps worth it.
My heart exhibits premature ventricular contractions (PVCs) when at rest. It causes my heart to appear to "skip a beat" on a regular basis. Under exercise my heart rate increases and the PVC's go away. I have had this for over 20 years. My father has had it for 50. But last year my doctor took notice of it and decided to do a nuclear study of my heart. The result was that the software in the scanner determined that I had a low ejection fraction (heart output) that turned out to be triggered by averaging the output, but including the PVC beats that had little or no output. So now with a formal test showing insufficient ejection fraction I had to prove that I wasn't in danger of dying in the next three minutes. (The doctor did take notice that I was riding my bike on a 35mi route every couple of days to and from work. The result was two stress tests, a Holter monitor, and two echocardiograms, one of which was a stress echocardiogram. (OK, I wanna see YOU run you ass off on the the tread mill, jump off, lie down, and hold YOUR breath while they scan your heart with the ultrasonic imager!) And all of this was to make sure that I could prove to the FAA that I really, truly have no cardiac problem. I did this preemptively at a cost of over $25,000, of which only 50% was picked up by my insurance, just so that I could present the whole thing, fait accompli, to the medical examiner when going for my 3rd-class medical. Everything that was done was done at the suggestion of AOPA's medical advisory service. It worked, the examiner wrote the medical certificate on the spot and the FAA never came back and questioned me. Still, it was a pain in the ass AND the wallet.
