inaugural flight of G-UMPY yesterday and Sywell, at the capable hands of Andy Draper.
Sounds fantastic going overhead, dont know why it should sound any different to any other 912 engined plane.
"A good one" the man said.
However, on inspection after today's flight the Port water downpipe to the radiator is too close to the exhaust. I'll need to move the raditor/air guide down and back slightly and maybe use a silicone pipe or add insulation somehow. Its a classic body with XS FWFD anyone else had this issue?

Graeme,

CONGRATULATIONS! on the first flight of G-UMPY. You should be able to resolve the plumbing issue and enjoy many hours flying your own Bird. I'll be at the hanger later this morning and will see if I can get some pictures of my down-pipe for you.

Hi Graeme,

congrats to this big moment.
On my Europa classic I had the same problem with the radiator hose to close to the exhaust.
The hose broke one due to the high temperature.
The owner before then used some heat shield material, zhe same as used on the firewall.
That worked so far but I now replaced the hose with a alloy pipe but have not been airborne jet.
The Rotax installation book recommends this too.

Thanks for all the posts, really nice of you all.
I attach a picture of the plane (same as the rest, except perhaps not so polished) and Andy Draper and my inspector Matthew Boddington.

You look suitably proud Graeme, and your polish exceeds my standards,
ever decreasing as they may be as I pressure myself to finish.

What's the back story on your use of what appears to be an XS cowl on
your Classic?...and your prop/spinner combo is?

Congratulations,

Fred

Well, did the test flights, got the permit (took a couple of months), and have just about completed the coaching (LAA scheme) with Andy Draper at Sywell and met the insurance requirements (5hrs, 15 landings).
Not too much trouble so far with landings. All on grass, different conditions/runways.
Few small snags to sort:
I find the gear leaver hard to pull off the notch - might need a different handle
I need a rubber slit on it to stop water/air coming up the slot,
Original tyre is rubbing slightly (might try some hellerman oil on it before each flight) I guess I'll have to change to the thinner one soon.
Witter ASI tends to ring on rotation.
Andy has been great.

Otherwise all good and very pleasing.

Well done Graeme,

As a Europa wannabe I'm interested to learn more about your insurance costs. Are you a tail wheel pilot of old or are you new to the Europa transferring from a tricycle?

5 hrs 15 landings doesn't seem too onerous to me.

Dave

Dave, I have about 600hrs, all tricycle, several different types, been with Traffords for about 10 years mostly as part of a syndicate on a Rallye.
Insurance is around £1500. I had also insured the project with them. No accident history.
Didnt seem that bad to me considering my C42 is/was around 1200-1300.
Interestingly, I now have a one-up/ one down policy with them for around another 350 so both planes are insured presently (me only though).

Regards

After around 70 practice landings on grass Andy Draper sat with me while I tried the mono on tarmac for the first time. Interesting, not that scary though, seems to want to rock a bit and I was recommended not to feel compelled to get back on the Centre Line once I'd wandered off but to keep straight.
Also tried my short grass strip with no head wind a few times. The strip seemed a lot shorter than with my C42.
So my formal training is complete and it didn't seem so difficult to me.
