I am fitting a Vertical Power VP-X Sport Electronic Circuit Breaker System to my second Europa.

Vertical Power provide an Online Load Planning Tool. A question asked is "Does your primary alternator have an External Regulator (B & C or similar) or does it have an Internal Regulator (Power Plane or similar). My engine is a Rotax 912S.

Can anyone tell me which of these two types of regulator the 912S has please?

Thanks, Bob Fairall, Kits 71 and 494.

Bob,
Page 13 of the latest Vertical Power VP-X install manual (Feb 20, 2012) goes into an explanation of the different types of regulators. See if that answers you question. If not email them, they are very helpful.

If you have a "stock" 912S it comes with an external rectifier-regulator. The generator is mounted on the back of engine, a stator internal generator. The external regulator has several lettered connection points two of which are B and C. Don't know if that is what your VP-X is referencing? Hope this helps.

Bob,

The Rotax has an external regulator but the set-up is a different animal from the one being referred to.

B&C is a reference to B&C Specialty Co.

If I were you I would follow Bill McClellan's advice.

Bob,

If you are set on using this device, why not call them and ask the
company to explain how to use it with a Rotax?
Maybe they can clarify why they apparently do not have clear
documentation for these engines.

Bob

I have a Vertical Power VP-X fitted to my 914 powered DynAero MCR-4S.

It has been in the air for 10 months, I have attached my schematic as how it is all fitted together. Trust this is useful.

I use a Schicke regulator from Germany as the original Rotax Ducati does not have great reliability, no difference in wiring configuration. The circuit also show my overvoltage protection as provided by the VP-X

Cheers Peter

Hi Peter,

Thanks for the schemata.

Might be a miss in the wiring. You have two wires leading to the shunt connectors of the MGL box. Both of these wind up on the hot lead from the battery??

Ira

Not miswired, in the Schicke regulator that is where they have the indicator lamp and I chose to go without it.

Thanks for the observation.

Cheers Peter

Hi Peter,
Interesting circuit diagram, Thanks for posting it .
I was amazed to see that the VPX its self is not protected by a fuse or circuit breaker - it must be reliable !
Also, Ira's observation seems correct,

Steve.

Peter,

The shunt is a low value resistor through which all current out of the
alternator flows. The small voltage generated by the current gives
you your ammeter signal to the MGL. It has nothing to do with the
Alternator Warning lamp.
