Hi All.
The Magnetic plug, mine is the old stile Allen Key type, the new ones have an Hexagonal head so you can use a socket,
The cost is $63 in the UK and $52 in the States.
So if i want a new one it going to cost me £40, plus P/P
Do the magnets get weak over time, and is there a way of re magnetizing them.??

Alan

Alan,

You'll never have to replace it because of loss of magnetism.

Take care when tightening and you'll never have to replace it again.

Hi Alan,

It probably isn't an Allen wrench for the mag plug on your old one. It is a #40 Torx. If you use an Allen you'll strip it out.

Hi Chaps.
Before doing the job i carefully looked a it, the sides of the hole they were flat and the best fit seemed to be Allen Key , as the side of the hole had no inward curves, it hard to tell it may have been worn, but looked more Allen key, i used an Allen key on a 1/4" socket extension which did the job,
I have a question,
Why can,t i put some Araldite on the little "Allen Key adaptor Bit" and knock it tightly into the hole and let it set.
So next time i can put my hard metal socket on the hard metal key inset in the plug.?

Alen:

The EPOXY will more than likely be softer than the material of the plug.  But, if the edges of the plug are deformed, yes, give it a try.  As they say : "It can't houit".

Question(s):
What is the plug made of?
What is the threaded hole made of?
Is there a Heli-Coil in the threaded hole?
I think the solution is very simple for all these problems.

Hi Alan,
I think it would be better to just do it the right way. It will save you time, effort and money in the long run. The 16mm hex head mag plug would be the better way to go.

I agree with Roger. Why complicate things? Do it the right way, and forget all this adapter/epoxy nonsense.

Hi All.
Today i cut open the oil filter, this is the first oil filter i have cut open,
but my gut feeling tells me this was the first time anybody has bothered to do it on this aircraft, and from what i feel many others the same.
However, i do not know what is acceptable in the filter.
I could not see any large particles of 1 mm or 1/2 mm, I could see brown carbon deposits, I then looked at the paper in the sunlight and could not see any metal on the oil covered paper.
However after throwing it away i noticed my fingers felt a bit gritty to small to see, but i could see a few very small pin head of silver in the sunlight, very small, and it was not apparent when inspecting the paper .
As a green horn i would say all was OK , what do you think.

Alan

Hi Alan,

Sounds like all was okay.

If you really want to see what's in an oil filter. Cut the paper element out. Put it in a small jar with about 1" of fuel and shake it up fairly well. The remove the filter and look at it. It will most likely be very clean as the fuel washed it off. Now pour the fuel and oil residue through a white paper towel. What ever was on that filter element will now stand out like a sore thumb against the white paper towel surface. Usually I only see a few carbon flecks and once in a while a chrome colored fleck.

How about a coffee filter? Might be a better filter than a paper towel.
