A couple of days ago, we had perfect weather for some IFR proficiency work. Ceilings starting at 300AGL to 1,000AGL in the morning, sloped across the local area and slowing rising to an even 1,200 by evening.

My 4th approach of the day was into KHNZ where I requested and was immediately cleared for the RNAV Rwy 6. Having briefed the approach using Foreflight on my iPad, I proceeded to dial it up on the G430 and whoa, no approach! My choice was the Loc 6 or the RNAV 24. It was easier to just fly the RNAV 24 downwind and circle for Rwy 6 for the full stop.

What happened? All my DBs were current. There weren't any NOTAMs concerning the approach and ATC cleared me for it, but I could not fly it.

I called Jepp today and found out that:
             - Jeppesen routinely "opts out" of including a number of approaches each Nav Data cycle
 - These are usually older and/or more exotic approaches, e.g. circling approach with an RF leg. But not always.
 - Often the omissions are due to an FAA change that makes the approach "unprogrammable" without additional changes.
 - Usually, approaches that Jepp opts out of, are NOTAM'd out of commission. But not always.
 - It is possible to have a published RNAV approach, appear in all publications including Jeppesen paper and electronic reference products, but not be included in the navigation database for the G430
 - There's no way to identify such omissions other than to attempt to load the procedure on the G430
       I just didn't expect that.

I noticed you also need to make sure it is not for "jet aircraft" since some of the STARS and SIDS are specific for them.

Sounds like complaints are in order to Jeppesen, Garmin and FAA. You are paying to have ALL approaches available and current, and they are providing you less than what they described as their product. FAA isn't giving you any other choice and is certifying the product, which is clearly defective. JMHO.

Well, that explains the "Service Alert" number 1228 I got from Garmin the other day.
