I am in the process of changing the spark plug wires on my older 912 UL (mid 90's). I am also doing a resistance check on the caps and have found at least one of them out of the Rotax lower limits (4400 ohms) . All of them so far have run about 4600 ohms vs the 5000 they should be.
Is there someplace I can buy NGK VDO5FMH plug caps without paying the almost $50 a piece that Rotax charges ? I can get VDO5EMH caps on line for about $7 each but I believe they take solid tip plugs vs the threaded that Rotax calls for.
I have not been able to locate the "F" caps either locally or "on line"

				Dick,

Did some searching and found a french company, LorAvia, which sells them for 11.00 € or about $14.68 each.
 http://loravia.com/shop/en/spark-plug-connector-vdo5fmh-nc?keyword=VDO5FMH&description=true&model=1
If it comes up in French, click on the Brit flag in the upper right and search on the part number.
I haven't found any US dealers other than the Rotax dealers who want $50+/- each for them.
Hopefully, someone else can come up with a U.S. source at a reasonable price.

It is not clear to me from the information given on these caps that they are
specifically for fitting the threaded end of the spark plug after the tip is
removed (as required by Rotax), or if they are for fitting over the cap that
comes on the plug. Can you answer this?

				Hugh,

I've attached a part number buildup guide from NGK so that you can see how the part numbers are assigned. By using the guide you can determine the specification for each resistor cover.

If you end up with the type caps that are sized for the plugs with the screw-on tips in place, you can buy the screw-on tips separately, or take them off of NGK plugs that are sold at most automotive stores.

FWIW, Jabiru engines use 12mm NGK plugs but a different series than Rotax. Jabiru plugs have the screw-on tips.

Many thanks for the link to the NGK Resistor Covers. From the information
shown the letter code for the proper cover for the threaded end of the
DCPR7E spark plug is the letter F. Do you agree?

Thanks for all of your replies !
The reason I replaced the spark plug wires was due to a miss on my left mag. It was misfiring badly !
On two previous occasions I had breaks in the red coil wire from the back of the engine (coil power to the module) and thought that it had broken again but that was not the case,
I switched modules and the problem remained on the left mag (A module in my case)
I then decided to change the HD wires as I do have an old engine (the wires have 1992 printed on them) The spark plugs were changed on the A plugs but that didn't help either. I also checked the resistance on the dual coils (secondary) and that was good.
I also decided to check the caps for resistance and found them all in the Rotax specs except for one (4400-6000 ohms) They were all at the low end however (about 4500)So now I will be changing the caps also.
The wire ( aprox 16ft) was about $35 a meter from Rotax and the caps about $50 ea ! I believe that aprox $575 is a bit much to pay for a new spark plug harness !!!
Anyway I was able to get Rotax wire from Spruce for $1.17 a foot and ended up buying 8 caps for $47 including shipping (the price for 1 from Rotax) The caps I ordered were VDO5EMH vs the "F" plugs that originally came with my engine. They are identical except they take the round vs threaded end which should be no problem according to a local Rotax guru . The plug numbers are the same (except for the solid tip) and as a side note the plugs are also used on Harley's so there should never be a problem getting them.
I should have waited to order as a member wrote me and gave me a location to buy the "correct' plug caps for $6.30 ea. I did order one of them to replace the one that is way below limits.
I will replace all the caps when they arrive.
In the meantime,I ran the engine with the new plug wires and the mag drop is gone !! Yeaaahhh !
I was curious as to why the 5000 ohm resistor caps are so important. (Electrics are my weak area)
   One of the sites said:

"Resistor Covers May Be Required for Power Sport Applications When Spark Plugs Alone Don't Provide Sufficient Noise Suppression.

Designed to Reduce Electro Magnetic Interference and Radio Frequency Interference, Which can Interfere with Electronic Ignition Components, Causing Misfires and Poor Engine Performance."

So there you go...that's the reason ! (learn stuff every day !)
Again , thanks for all your help !

				Hi Dick,

Glad that pesky issue is behind you. I hate tracking electrical ghost.
 Time to fly.
