Thinking of trips for this year, and must get to Ireland from Beds UK, any recommendations for a day trip, friendly field near something interesting? I gather I need to file a GAR form, and guess I have to land at a designated 'port'.

Newcastle co wicklow,
http://www.einc.ie
Great place for a visit, usually have a courtesy car if pre booked, but not far to greystones where you can pick up the Dart into Dublin ,
Another good airfield if it's still open is Weston to the west of Dublin, the VFR route is overhead the city following the river Liffey, but not as easy to get back to the city by public transport,

Graeme - when I went with the 2008 Europa Club trip to Ireland in Tim Houlihan's G-BZTH, Kilrush (EIKH) was friendly although it we found it quicker to get a lift to the nearest petrol station with a jerry-can than wait for the pumps to open! I think Tim has also done a day trip to Kilkenny (EIKK) where he was made welcome.

in friendship

Graeme, I have thoroughly enjoyed visiting Eglinton/Derry.
Pleasant people, good restaurant, spectacular coast
nearby, Giants Causeway to visit on the way there. Also
enjoyed Newtownards for easy access to Belfast. Had looked
forward to Weston for trip into Dublin, but weather
intervened. Have visited Cork, but do NOT recommend it.
(expensive & inconvenient). If you are prepared to make it
more than a day I strongly recommend Galway and excursions
out to the Arran Islands, looking at Alcock & Brown's
landing site, etc.
You certainly need a GAR form which needs to go
to
customs and to Police. The requirements are complex and I
suggest looking at:
www.gov.uk/government/publications/general-aviation-operators-and-pilots-notification-of-flights
where you will find latest regs. Regards, David Joyce,
