Thanks Jim for your reply. I have ridden snowmobiles since the 70,s and obviously a lot of things have changed when it comes to oil. The man that I purchased my 582 from ran 90 to 1 all the time with no problems. I will be doing the same thing. I wonder why Rotax recommends 40 to 1 for a 583 engine. That engine puts out about 105 horsepower and uses RAVE valves.

I suspect that the company wants to lessen their liability by specifying higher oil content. The tragedy is that too much oil is just as bad as too little. Before the advent of wrist pin and big end needle bearings the higher oil content was actually necessary but certainly not as high as the 20 to 30:1. Once these bearings were introduced oil content could fall dramatically. Too much oil in this case would cause the bearing to skid vice roll. Same applies to ball bearings.

Less oil in a RAVE is beneficial from a coking standpoint...keep the valves free and thing are much happier.

I've got an old McCollough 30B chainsaw from the mid 50s that has a 16:1 recommendation. Runs fine at 50:1.....just way too heavy to use, tho!
