 Hi Bob,

   I just got myself some Lightspeed Sierra ANR and plugged them into my RV-7A this morning. Prior to this I just had a couple of sets of regular headphones. The headphones worked without the noise canceling turned on (push button, 2AA batteries). When I push the button the noise level got reduced and it sounded real good. When I key the transmitter there is a loud squeal. With the nose cancelling off, there is no squeal when I keyed the transmitter. I think this only happened when the engine was running. I think I checked the transmitter and headphones before I started the engine this morning? I have my jacks wired through a Flightcom 403mc and my radio is a GNC300XL. I had to fly this morning with the noise cancelling off but I should wanted it on! Any thoughts would be appreciated. John Robinson. RV-7A Phase 1.

I recently bought a set of Bose headsets and had a similar thing happen. Oddly enough, I was able to hit the PTT and talk to ground fine, however, when i went to tower and hit the PTT I got a loud squeal. Strange how a different frequency on the radio induces the noise. Anyone have a thought? use a filter?

I had that problem with a previous plane, where radio mostly worked fine 

with lower frequencies, but would squeal with frequencies above say 

125.0. Once I put my radio in another aircraft that didn't have 

problems, it was obvious the problem existed in my airplane outside of 

the radio. Turned out to be the antenna cable, which was made in the 

days before crimped connectors were common. On the radio end of the 

cable there was a cold solder joint on the shield, allowing RF to 

feedback into the radio. I was given all kinds of theories in trouble 

shooting, of problems in the radio, problems with the brand headset not 

having shielded wires, etc. etc.

New cable completely eliminated the problem.

So I suggest trying a different PTT, try your radio in a different 

airframe that has same model radio, see if the problem follows the 

components or not.

Try also taking your headset cord and wrap three turns of it around your hand and secure it with a pair of tie wraps.  You've just made an RF choke that may eliminate conduct RF energy into the headset.

My headsets are plugged into the bulkhead right behind the baggage area in my RV-7A. The thought was to keep the cords out of the way. When I bought the nose canceling headsets it became difficult to reach the headset controller(volume, Bluetooth, on/off) so I bought a 5ft extension from Aircraft Spruce and I no longer have any squealing? Go Figure? This 5ft extension also allows me to easily unplug my headset if I have to use my handheld as a backup. Previously I would have to yank the cord from the back bulkhead which I am sure is not a good idea. Thank you guys for all of your input. John
