I need to remove my front seat back for a upholstery repair

Can the seat back be removed or must I remove the whole seat?

What is easiest?

I imagine it can be done either way, but I'd remove the whole seat. With a small modification (shorten the rail, or bevel the front slide on the seat) you can remove the seat without removing the flap cover.

You can remove the upper back pretty easy. Roll your seat cover up about 6-8

inches and then there are 4   1/4-28 screws with

Lock nuts remove these. Very easy. See photo They might be a little harder

to get to while in the aircraft

I beveled the fwd upper part of the nylon insert back about 1/2" all the 

way across (real thin at the fwd end) so the rear of the seat can be 

lifted to clear the flap cover.  No need to shorten the rail.  I tapped 

the mounting holes in the seat lock and used bolts to hold it in place.  

Lift the seat cushion up and a ratchet makes quick work of the bolts.  

You have to either remove the stop or the lock .....

Rear.



You need to remove the seat stop spring pin for the seat to slide out.



You need to unscrew and move the flap operator cover below the rear seat to

get enough room for the seat to slide out of the rail.

I ran into that issue also.  I believe the carevout for the forward bolt 

in the seat rail stop is too small to get a standard wall socket in 

there.  If I remember correctly, I purchased a set of thin wall sockets 

and that did the trick.

I’ve used the ratchet wrenches a lot.  I can’t remember if ti will work there, but they really make life easy when applicable.  The quality brands are worth the extra $$.

And, don't buy the ones that don't reverse. You can sometimes get stuck not being able to get the Wrench off, if you don't have the reversing ones.

A thin wall 1/4" drive socket works great.  I just ground a standard socket down to fit and keep it separated for just that purpose to remove the seat.

RV10 Front Seat removal has been a topic that's generated a lot of interest Alan. FlyingNuts solution is the way I went with minor adjustments after others had worked it out. That is, cut 3/8inch off the top forward nylon runners, extend the two holes in the seat rail stops through the seat floor F1067A then fit two nut plates per seat under the seat floor for the seat stop bolts (need to be a little longer than originals) Now only two easy accessed bolts to remove the seat stop allows the seat to be removed rearward without the removal of T handles, Cushions or flap cover. JFYI there is a thread on VAF RV10 forum started in 2010 to 2015 that has been viewed about 5000 times and to date has generated 42 replies with pretty much everything known to man about RV10 front seat removal fleshed out.
