What tools and things should I have on hand for an oil change? I've just hit the 10 hour mark and really don't want to make a mess of things in my nice clean engine compartment.

Good luck with that.  I have used the plastic bag technique with some success…..and some failures.  Place a plastic bag around the filter and hold it up against the engine.  Spin off the filter and let it drop in the bag.  Wipe off the little bit that drips off onto the engine.

I use a Form-A-Funnel under the filter when spinning it off.  Awesome 

product.

I second Reneâ€™s technique with the bag, and the fact it doesnâ€™t always work as things can go bad quickly if the bag moves away.  Iâ€™ve had better luck using ziplock bags as there is more rigidity where I hold it up against the engine side of the flange.  Putting a number of paper towels under the oil filter helps save the day if oils seeps out.  Poking a hole in the filter and rotating the hole to the bottom side helps empty a lot of the oil that would otherwise want to run all over your firewall/nosegear before you remove the filter.

You can also punch a small hole on the       'top' side of the filter to let air in so it'll drain some of the       oil trapped in the filter.  Put a piece of tape over the hole when       you remove the filter .... and use the bag.  You'll have the       cowling off to get to the sump drain so that leaves the floor to       catch the drips ...

Interesting at the various methods used. I found that a simple plastic 

container, like an old butter container, fit perfectly to catch the oil 

from the oil filter. It fits nicely on top of the fuel pump and is 

captured by a couple of hoses in the area. I have never had a drop of 

oil spill out.



Of course, do NOT forget to remove the butter container. I actually did 

this once. 25 or 50 hours later, I discovered the butter container 

sitting there. Oooops! However, amazingly, no oil spilled out. Someone 

was looking out for me and no aerobatics.

Forgot to mention, that i never had much luck with the quick drains. 

Personally, i would not bother. I had one of the quick drains break. I 

dont like them. The hose you have to use, creates more of an oily mess 

than anything. The less *stuff* you get oil on, the better, i think.



I let the oil drain into a 5 gallon bucket raised up closer to the 

engine. Do the butter catcher thing. Replace the filter. Replace drain 

plug. Then add new oil. Done.

I did my own funnel from a 2" plastic tube a bit of cutting and heating.



Works as expected and a clean engine compartment!

I poke a hole in the top of the filter as mentioned by others, then place a disposable baby diaper under the filter before removing it. It catches any spill. I haven't spilled a drop in several years of using this method.
