|
|
I have just submitted my paper work for my annual and had fitted a landing light in the air intake. LAA have asked for MOD 2 for it. Fair enough. Has anyone done this in the UK or the world to bolster the application? See pic of the sealed unit I have used - high intensity with lens but only 250mA and sealed and aluminium.
I have a job to get my engine beyond 80 deg most of the year so am not too concerned about the small air obstruction to the water/oil radiator. It has its own bracket and I have stiffened up the air deflector in a central area and bolted in with two locking screw and so I think there is negligible risk of it coming off and into the prop.
The Raychem wiring is routed up past the fuel pump where all is cool and over the top of the engine so that should not be a concern.
It weighs 170grms so its not that heavy, cross sectional area about 10% of the air intake.

Hi Graeme,
It just so happens that I submitted a Mod 3 for a cowl based landing light yesterday. I've been in discussion with Andy Draper about it and I believe there should be no problems getting the OK to proceed.
My mod is for a very powerful 3480 Lumen LED light. I wanted something that was going to have the ability to give me enough light to land on an unlit runway or road in the case of an emergency at night. I've attached the doc that describes the installation. I'll let you know if I get the OK.
Regards
Carl

Hi Graeme,
I obtained Andy Draper approval under MOD-13072 for almost the same implementation as yours, in 2012, for G-TAGR. If you want the paperwork i have, let me know your email and i will send it to you off-list. It test-flew fine and i also found i could dramatically reduce the current drain from abt 4A to less than 1A by using an LED H3 lookalike bulb in the fitting bought from Part for Aircraft.

I too am fitting landing lights to my aircraft and have submitted a mod3 form. When I first contacted Andy he mentioned that the only "legal" landing light was that on G-TAGR. I have modified the outrigger speed kit fairings to hose them.

"legal landing light", that's a mystery to me, even the one that was approved in 13072 has been changed for another lamp unit. What could be the illegal, the wavelength of light? the number of lumens, the beam angle? The mechanical socket?
The fact is that LED technology has been changing so fast that the lumens per watt is so much better than it used to be and on some more than.
I'll see what happens with my MOD 2 form. I have yet to get a hold of 13072, maybe there are some aspects I can copy.
