I'm considering fitting the speed kit and have a few questions.



How much does the whole kit weigh? How much speed is REALLY added, because I'm sceptical about the 10 knot increase which is claimed by some? Which components of the kit give the most speed benefit? Does anyone have such a kit for sale second-hand in good condition?

I bought my XS Trigear second hand, so cannot comment on the actual weight or the difference it makes in speed. As with other figures I'd consider the values claimed by Europa as rather optimistic.  



FWIW my Europa with the complete speed kit does exactly 130KIAS/154KTAS (at) 10.000 ft in standard atmosphere +10Â°C with just me on board and full tank at MCP with the Rotax 914 and CS-prop.

I had occasion to fly my Tri-gear, 912S, without the wheel spats during last winter because of the soggy conditions and mud.



Knocked around 5Kts off the cruise so I surmise that each of the parts over the flap hinges etc contribute a little to overall speed gain. Not weighed the spats though so might do that next time I have them removed.

The speedkit is probably worth 10kts.  A REALLY good surface finish and polish is worth 5kts.  Diving gently into a cruise by progressively applying down trim is also worth a few kts.  I first noticed this on a DA20, climb into the cruise and it struggled to keep up with a C152, dive into the cruise and it would do 110kts.



Adding a camera anywhere (on a go-pro type mount) -is -5kts.

5 knots at cruise is about the same as I can report without wheel fairings (mine is a taildragger with similar 500x5 wheels). And is also about what RV pilots have noted (6" wheels). 

However, both on mine and the RVs, it is the leg fairings that make the biggest difference (about 10 knots).

Similarly, a tailwheel fairing is reported on RVs to be worth about 2 to 3 knots, which is what I've recorded (at Vne) on the TD. Haven't tried a tailwheel leg fairing (yet).

Please define "..good surface finish and polish"! I tried that before (using a micromesh kit) starting from the status of a mediocre (cf Renault?) automotive finish, and it made no difference at all.

35 InHg(at)5500RPM. That is 100% (100HP) out of 115% = throttle position at the detent.



The 914 is capable of MCP up to 16.000ft, so that TAS should increase with altitude. However, I didn't evaluate the exact speeds there, although I've been up to FL200.
