For some reason I have been unsubscribed and I have not been able to re-subscribe, so I am completely out of touch. I tried searching the forum via the web, but found nothing on this question I have: Has there been any discussion around the Dynon Advanced Control Module? It seems like a great idea to me, particularly for a VFR airplane where a failure would not be the end of the world. What do list members think of this particular product. I understand it ties me to the Dynon ecosystem, but I can live with that. I'm particularly interested in what folks think about the reliability of this product.

Thanks Joe! I am trying to get on to the Vans forum, but I don't know if I will measure up to their high qualifications. When I said I was having trouble with this forum, I mean that I cannot get any email notifications. I have tried repeatedly and cannot get it going. Of course, I checked my spam folder. And before the emails stopped completely, they would constantly be sent to spam, even though I would always instruct gmail that they were "not spam." Anyway, I hope I can get into the Van's forum. They make it pretty difficult to sign up.

For those unable to read the post by Carl Froehlich on VansAirforce, I have quoted it below.  Carl Froehlich is an electrical guru.  His comment refers to the VP-X Pro and the Advanced Control Module.

Thanks Matt, you may have already fixed it. I did get two messages this

evening. One went to spam, and one went to my inbox. As I always do, when a

message goes to spam i mark it "not spam" and gmail moves it to my inbox,

but it doesn't seem to affect what happens to following messages -- they

might go to spam, they might not. Anyway, those two messages that i got

today were the first in a long time, so i think it might be fixed.

I realize that the ACM would lock me in to the Dynon ecosystem. That is not a problem from my perspective. Having wired one airplane, I can see that the ACM would be a huge time saver, and I think it would remove chances for error, particularly by a guy who wires one airplane every 10 years. So, I am sold on the general idea of the ACM.



My primary hesitation is about reliability. I just don't have any feel for the reliability factor for something like this. I will say that I strictly fly VFR, and I will also have an iPad connected to a Sentry, and the engine is a 912iS which completely bypasses the ACM, so a failure of the ACM would be an inconvenience, not a disaster.



I did get accepted to the Van's forum (whew) and it looks like the ACM is pretty popular with those guys. Anyway, I will listen to all opinions and thank in advance to anyone who wants to chime in.

In general, solid state devices are much more reliable than mechanical devices 

such as switches and circuit breakers.  On the other hand, if there is a failure, 

You could lose many functions, not just one.  Another consideration is cost.  You 

could save over $3000 by installing fuses and switches instead.  But if you like 

toys and have lots of money, go for it.

It really has nothing at all to do with toys. It is more about saving time, avoiding mistakes, and ending up with a product that simplifies both fixing stuff and upgrading. It seems to me that the ACM does all of those things. Thanks for the opinion on reliability.
