				Hello,

I'm a new builder in Michigan and am just starting a 701. I've looked at the 701 for a number of years but was always on the edge of starting the project. I have a 1800' grass strip that I plan to fly from. Living in Michigan though provides a large amount of lakes and I had thought of amphibs as well. I had the opportunity to look at Mike Elrods 701 here in Michigan and it is on full amphibs. By the way - Mike has a beautiful 701 and his cockpit layout and uncluttered appearance is fantastic.  It must come from driving all that big iron around the sky. Which brings me to a question. I don't think full amphibs would fate to well on a slightly bumpy grass strip, would Zeniths tri-amphibs stand up to a little more abuse? They would probably be used only three months out of the year before the wheels go back on. Does Zenith still sell these as kits and or plans?

  Thanks for the input,
  Ben [quote][b]

				Ben
I am thinking of the same uses for my 701. I live on a lake in south GA and would like to fly from the lake in the summer months. I asked Joy at zenith if they offered the floats and she said they used to but did not anymore. She referred me to CAN-ZAC. When I called them I was told they might have some by spring '07 in the range of 6,000 to 10,000. A little too steep for me. Let me know if you find anything. I am just starting to build.

				Lane,

Same here, I'm just starting and while I would like the amphibs I don't want to pay that kind of price for them. I do recall though that at one time there were plans floating around for the amphibs that Zenith were selling. I think Czech aircraft were building them for Zenith. Maybe someone else will know if the plans might be available somewhere.

Lane, I have built a XL and have seen photos of 701s with different style floats so they are available. Also, I have seen several pair in the last few months for sale in the Trades. Probably save some money there. Also, in the various magazines over the past years I have seen articles about building your own floats. If you can build an airplane, a couple floats should be a snap. Check the archives. I'll bet you find something. Best regards, Bill of Georgia [quote][b]

Check out the Full Lotus floats. The guys who fly them up this way use them year round on ice and snow too.

				Greetings Bill of G.

I have been looking for plans for metal floats in the 1500 lb range and have found very little. If you could site any of the magazines or articles you mention I would very much appreciate it.

  Thanks,
  Ray J.

Ray, I haven't seen any amphib plans anywhere but WAG
Aero sell plans for the North Aire series of floats.
They can be built from 1100# up to 1500# I believe by
 adding an extra compartment.

I have a set of plans for them but have not looked at
them in detail for a while. Seems to me the plans
only cost around $90.00 or so.

As for amphibs, you might be able to modify them to
work as amphibs. This is what I am thinking of trying
if Zenith (CAN-ZAC) decides to only produce completed
 floats.

<?xml:namespace prefix="v" /><?xml:namespace prefix="o" /><![endif]--> If anyone is interested in a pair of Avid 1100 Amphibious (Fiberglass) White gel coated, excellent condition I can put you in touch with the owner. I do know that he had them on for one season but removed them because he said it got lonely sitting in the middle of the lake with no one to talk to. If interested let me know. I'm sure he would send pictures

A couple years ago I flew a 701 at Skyshops in Fla, that had Czech four-wheel amphib floats on it. This was from a grass field. Landing, takeoff, and handling on water, with two people, was impressive. The installation had been redesigned to be more like a traditional float plane, and the looks and performance were teriffic. I'm pretty sure this package is still available and I think still in the 8K range. They would be my first choice.

				Bill,
I flew that airplane also and was also impressed. I talked to Grant Rappe (Skyshops demo pilot with a LOT of 701/amphib time) at LENGTH and he brought up a point I had not thought of which convinced me to go with the 3 wheel combo and the tundra tire on the front. He pointed out that the front wheels on the 4 wheel floats are small enough to be almost useless in beaching the aircraft on anything other than a hard surface ramp. They bury themselves.
My intended use is a LOT of operation off/on the beach so I went with the 3 wheel version. LOW&SLOW John
