List,
I think it is wrong to second guess what Jim did do or didn't do. It becomes an emotional topic because you are "dammed if you do", and "dammed if you don"t" say anything.  We don't know if Jim used poor preflight procedures, or had some type of leak which caused fuel to leak from the tanks while he was flying.----- Either way, he ran out of fuel, and was at an unsafe altitude.

The second question is: Did Jim fly the airplane to the very last minute, or did he panic and stall the airplane while close to the ground. We don't have the answers.

But, this I will say. The list has spent a lot of time speculating on Jim's accident. Yet, the AMD 601 with the inflight explosion, the airplane came apart in flight, a man and his wife was killed isn't even mentioned here-------------- I believe there is a lot to be learned from that accident. (to bad we'll have to wait so long for the NTSB to have a final report on both on these unforunate accidents.)

I mentioned in the past that every pilot/ homebuider should have two (sets)books and read them.
(1) STICK and RUDDER, by Wolfgang Langewiesche and (2) the set of 4 books sold by Aircraft Spruce written by TONY BINGELIS. This led to a big "thread" on this site. Half saying the Sick and Rudder was great, the other half talking like they knew it all and didn't need the books.

I know I'll get flamed for this, but: I think the informaion from those those two authors and the knowledge available form William Wynne (directly, written and video) can keep a lot of folks out of trouble. I think that many forget a "private pilots license" should be the beginning of learning how to fly, not the highlight of our learning curve.

Fritz

For someone chiding others for speculating, you're sure doing a lot of it yourself. There is no mention of an in-flight explosion in the NTSB report. No mention of an unsafe altitude. No mention of panic. No leak, no tank puncture, no stall, no poor preflight ... nothing like this mentioned.

I hope you are at least as good at fabricating your home-built as you are fabricating bu!! 5h!t ... because that would be a really good plane! Do us all a favor and zip it already with the speculation. Where do you get off?

Yeah, you got flamed ... and you deserved it. You're wrong about "damned if you don't". JUST DON'T!
