I've been unemployed for a while.  26 years, if I make it another 3 days.  The hours are great, but the pay ain't worth a crap.  Prior to that, I was a soldier.  Pay wasn't too good then, either.  However, I have enjoyed both my careers, active as well as retired.

Occupations?  Been a lot of them, my best was being father to a 

wonderful

family,  fixing their cars, keeping the shack from falling down.

-All gone now,  kids grown, wife died.  Just me and a dumb old dog, two

cats (inherited), and a Kolb in the basement.

For pay?  mason's helper,  lab tech, precision large optics polisher,

4 years jet engine mech (USAF), hay baler,  plumber, HVAC mech,

pretty good gas welder, A&P,  beer drinker, alas, I quit the stogies.

I worked for thirty years with computers for the state of Michigan and got 

one of the last pensions. Retired as a network administrator 2.5 years ago. 

My wife retired at the same time but went back to work part time on 

contract, keeps her out of trouble and keeps us in cash. I'm kind of a handy 

man, built one house, two airplanes, a few cars and maintain everything. We 

live in Michigan in the summer and Florida in the winter.

Kolbers,



Started life on a knoll in north central Iowa. My Aunt's husband gave me my 

first ride in a Champ when I was eight years old. After a couple years in 

the US Army, started back to school at the University of Missouri in 1959 to 

be come a mechanical engineer.  I was a slow learner and so I did not go to 

work until 1970. Taught engineering at what is now IUPUI located in 

Indianapolis, IN. Eleven years later when my son wanted to go away to school 

and I found I could not afford to send him, I jumped out into industry.  I 

worked for RCA, GE and finally Tompson Consumer Electronics all in the same 

position for another eleven years.  I headed up a small self liquidated 

group that designed special equipment for proprietary television component 

manufacturing.  



One day after twenty some years in Indianapolis, my wife told me she had 

accepted a job in Omaha, NE, and did I want to come with her?  At that point 

I retired and became a kept man.  Omaha only lasted six months, but I got to 

fly in my first UL there.  Next the wife moved me to Cape Girardeau, MO.  I 

started building the FireFly there and got it in the air for the first time 

on 9/9/99.  The wife decided to retire in May, 2005, and so she purchased 

land and built a house at Winchester, IN. which is two miles away from an 

airport.  



Trying to get my certificate is a whole story unto its self, but then FAR 

103-7 came along and it and my wife saved me so that I could fly.  After I 

retired and having signed all my retirement accounts over to her, she 

practically pushed me out the door down toward the shop.  If I wanted to be 

irresponsible who was she to stop me?  At this point, I am just shy of 70 

and I enjoy every day.  My kids and wife are great and I still feel like a 

kept man.

I was really hesitant in replying to the post about our walks of life. but I felt a resaponsibility to my brother Kolbers to share my expierence.  



I'm a  61 year old male topless dancer   in an all male bar on Friday nights. I make most of my money from law suite   won against men who beat me up . I only have to work one night a week   (Fridays) but with the lawyer I have, he assures me that that is enough to establish my retirement nest egg.     

This allows me a considerable amount of time to fly my Kolb   , with or without the neck and back brace   , and sometimes without the eye-patch   . I hoping that if I continue doing what I doing and add Saturday nights, that I could in fact double my income and buy a Kolb Mark III with one of the new four cycle motors. This would allow me the opertunity to fly out and join John H. and the rest of you in Arazona. If any of you pilots woudl be interested, I als do  private partys, and bring my own club and chain.

Today is the 1st Saturday I've spent at home in over a month, and have 

(still have) every intention of going out to work on Vamoose, but several 

neighbors, seeing me out and about have stopped to chat, then went for lunch 

at my favorite Mexican restaurant, (remember El Mirasol ??) and the book 

store.  Now, after visiting with another neighbor, I'm sitting here with a 

belly full of tender Carnitas and...not...quite...ready...to get out there 

and get at it.  But I will ! ! !  Honest.                              Lar.

Welding and fabricating since the mid seventies. Mostly  TIG on light gauge 

aluminum but also mig and stick also. Presently unemployed by  choice. (I 

think........Yeah!)   Since they started  Location   I was born and raised in the 

Houston Texas area and Keep my  Firefly pretty close to where Robert Laird 

lives, which is about 30 mi. south of  Houston.

Rancher. 51 yrs. old. Third generation on the place raising both sheep and cattle. High plains of central New Mexico. The ranch varies from 5200' to 6000' and I complain a lot about my 503 being down 20%+ on horsepower compared to sea level. My house and strip are at N 34 38 030 W 104 59 443, which is about 12 miles east of Vaughn, NM. Coyotes are a real problem during lambing time, and when I have some more hours, I will solicit commentary and suggestions regarding arming my FS II. This should justify the depreciation I'm taking on my "predator control equipment".

  Great idea for a tax-deductible way to use the Kolb! I am looking for a legitimate use of mine (for tax purposes also), but being a part time landlord, I was not sure if hunting down fleeing renters was a reasonable "business use" for the Kolb!

Interesting Question. I've enjoyed the posts so far, guys keep them coming!!

 

 I'm a Project Controls Specialist.. Cost Control, Estimating, Schedule 

 management in The Gas and Oil industry right now. Spent about 15 year 

 in Petrochemical.  Most of that time in the Houston Area...

 

 My Dad instilled the love of flying from an early age. He gave me my 

 Private Pilots lic. As a graduation present.  I saved my pennies after 

 my son was born and bought Kit no. 1 and between 3 wives and 5 

 different Jobs and 4 different states I accumulated the rest... LOL  I 

 decided on The Kolb because of STOL and folding wings....

Joined the USAF in January 55 (as in 1955) less than a month after my 17th 

birthday.  Spent half of my 22 years as a "Gun Plumber" (Weapons Mechanic) 

and the other half as an Instructional Systems Development Specialists 

(Hello Ken).  Broke up with my first wife and went to work for Northrop in 

Saudi Arabia for a couple of years.  Then traveled around the US with a 

Suzuki 850 for a couple more years - Been to 46 States with that bike.  Got 

bored and figured I was spending wayyyy too much time in the bars so went 

back to work with Northrop in El Segundo, Calif,.  Found another wife (Yeah, 

Eve - a "keeper") and retired in 1993 after 12 years with the Company. 

Moved to Prescott, Az, and sold trailers out of my back yard for a couple of 

years just to keep busy, then bought a few duplexes and still manage them.



Got real excited about ultralights and Eve gave me an intro ride for my 

birthday.  I told the Instructor "screw the intro, I want to learn to fly 

one of these."  So I did.  Had to drive to Buckeye, AZ, for lessons (100 

miles one way) and flying so convinced "The Wife" that it was much more 

economical for me to get my own plane.  Got a line on a great Firestar here 

in town and bought it.  Put 100+ hours on it then got a 

"too-good-to-be-true" deal on a MKIII Classic.  Bought it and found out 

later that it really was "too-good-to-be-true" and I'd gotten mildly 

screwed.  But we've done a lot of work on it and I've put on 100+ hours in 

the last couple of years.
