Anybody fly in the winter? Any stories or pictures to share?

In N. Idaho, the highs are still below freezing but I still have to get my flyin' fix. It's harder in the winter, where before you fly you have to plow the runways, taxiways, and your hangar area. But it's still fun and worthwhile.

For next winter I want to get some skis for my Firefly. Anybody have any recommendations for what skis to get and where?

Thanks,
Jim

Have Ellery make you a pair of skies, if he doesn't already have some done.
I've seen them,held them,loved them, strong & light.

It looks like you'll need a taller windshield before you'll need skiis. That must be COLD. Surprised

It hasn't been too cold but I haven't gone UL flying in < 20 deg F. It's no worse than snowmobiling. The hardest part is getting everything prepared. Once your sitting in the cockpit the hard part is over and the fun begins. But I definitelly need a full enclosure!

Why is Ellery? How do I contact him re skis?

Thanks,
Jim

Jim...

I did my first ultralight flying in '82, North of Spokane... I bought a brand new Robertson B1-RD and flew all through that first Winter... We would make a short flight, land and stand around a 55 gal. burn barrel, take another short flight, land and stand by the fire in the barrel and keep repeating the process... The guy who owned the strip kept it plowed so we could fly off the packed snow until the Spring thaw and there was too much slush/mud...

Now I'm flying my Firestar with a full enclosure, wearing a snowsuit and think 32 degrees is cold...

David, I bet that's the same field I was flying out of in '85~86. I think it was about 5~8 miles North of Spokane. There were around 8 ultralights at the time, with most being tarped and parked under the trees. The runway went E-W. I also flew a B1-RD out of there (#315, blue and white).

The strip we were operating off from is now houses... It was owned by Jimmy Stanton and he kept his original design ultralight and Cessna 180 there... The strip was off from Highway 395 where it curves from North to Northwest between Spokane and Deer Park... The last time I flew in that area with my old Cessna 185, it was all homes and there wasn't any evidence of the old runway...

Sorry this isn't more Kolb related...

Looking at a sectional, I would say it's LEE, a private strip near
Chattaroy.

I have a real Full inclosure and with my heater system its really nice to go flying in the fridgid temps
the only thing I dont like is pulling the plane out of the trailer and riging it up in the real cold temps, but its nice after you have made a few trips to the heater in the truck to warm up and I always let the plane get making heat before I go flying , I can wear jeans and a light coat and sometimes I wish I had taken the coat off before take off but I can controll the heat in flight so I dont mind having the coat on

I only slide the wheels on to make it easier to drag the firestar into the trailer
If anyone on the list wants measurements and or  Details email me off list I would gladly get that info to you so you can do some winter flying also

Rear View of right ski with wheel

Front view of left ski with wheel

Left view with wheels on

Left side view without wheels

Pleas archive

How much does each ski weigh? Do you make yours out of square aluminum
tubing?
