Hey all –
Could someone give me some tips on spraying UV smoothprime? I can’t seem to get consistent results with my spray gun. It just starts spitting and not wanting to come out right. I thinned the paint like the instructions say, and I can’t seem to make it go right. I’d try to roll it on like it says, but it’s the interior of the cabin top, and I’ve got the overhead console in there which would make that hard. Any thoughts?

Use zolatone and forget all the prep of the interior surfaces...you are a
glutten for punishment.
Just a thought?

Did you run it through a paint filter? If you didn't, you're probably
getting chunks which are clogging the gun. I was surprised at how many
chunks of stuff that the paint filter caught.

Spraying Smoothprime is a challenge for me, but well worth it! I have
found that by following the dilution instructions on the can/pail that
it's too thick, and I have the same results you're seeing, so I dilute
it until I can get a better spray out, I don't have a ratio to use, I
just keep adding small amounts of water until I can get a 'wet' spray
pattern. the unfortunate side effect of that is that, for me, when I get
it this thin, unless I'm EXTREMELY careful I will inevitably end up with
a run, or two when shooting on a vertical surface. The runs sand out
fairly easily though so aren't really much of a problem. Shooting
several VERY light coats vs a couple of heavy coats works better as
well. Another thing I've noticed is that it seems to 'clog' a bit in the
gun, and that by placing a finger over the nozzle ,temporarily plugging
it, while pulling the trigger seems to help to clear any clogs that seem
to form in the gun while waiting for the coat you just sprayed to dry
enough to shoot the next coat. (be careful not to allow a buildup on
primer on the nozzle.)

I have had great luck spraying Smoothprime with my Harbor Freight HVLP gun. I thinned per instructions and filtered. I sprayed several thin coats.
I did have problems with another touch up gun but I think it was dirty. Rolling wastes a lot of material since it leaves a lot of texture. I also bush and squeegee it to fill low spots and holes.
I would not waste time using it on the inside if you are going to cover with headliner. I really like the stuff on the outside canopy and cowls.

Aaahh. Is there something that’s not a “filler primer” that can be sprayed on as primer over sanded epoxy? I am (I think) going to cover with headliner, but I’d like to seal the sanded epoxy with something before I cover it. is there something like Akzo for glass?

No reason to seal sanded epoxy, it in itself is a solid, non absorbant
material...unless you penetrated the glass cloth.
You are a glutten for punishment! As if we didn't have enough work to begin
with.

John,
I went to the Zolatone website and I am still confused as to
what it is exactly. Can you please describe what Zolatone is and how &
where you used it on a -10?
I am thinking of not using a head liner (I have a overhead
console) and was considering just painting the upper cabin.
Thanks in advance,
Robin

Zolatone is a splatter paint. I used it on my interior and it looks great on the ceiling because you don't have to worry about how to trim the edges of a headliner. I just prep'ed the top first by making the center joint and other areas real smooth. I have have numerous compliments on how nice it looks.
Thank You

Here are some pictures of my top. You can see that I filled all the voids around the rear windows so it was all smooth and then I sprayed the Zolatone. Zolatone requires a large tip for your gun so the little balls of paint don't explode until the hit the surface being sprayed and not at the tip of the gun.
Thank You

Zolatone is a waterbassed paint which provides a textured surface and
appearence. In the end it looks like granite. Because it is textured, one
only needs to remove the worst of the imperfections in the surface to be
coverred. It is a real time saver...it also looks like fabric with out all
the hassle of cutting and glueing..
Tip---Once the cabin top is all drilled and the aluminum backing strips area
drilled and de burred, one can glue the aluminum backing strips to the cabin
top and paint the entire interior before rivetting it in.
I know how many of you hate sanding out all those imperfections in that high
quality cabin top.
Maybe I'll send some photos later.

Probably the best sealer would be just epoxy thinned 50% with Acetone (Vans sealer approach).
