I mounted my 295 initially (now changed to 396) to the ventilation tube
between my legs. I used a RAM-B-108 base with strap clamp (P/N 11-02003) to
attach the ball base to the side of the tube. I then used the RAM-B-138-GAZ
(P/N 11-01766) to mount the ball clamp parallel to the tube with Garmin
sitting in front of the flat plate on the vent tube. I bought the mounts
 from Aircraft Spruce.
 Hope this helps.

I use RAM mounts. They have one that will mount to the glare shield and hold the 296. It is very sturdy and does not vibrate in flight.
 Mount: RAM-B-177-GA7U

I mounted mine in the center. Does cover up the artificial horizon when mounted.
