I am wondering if any of you have ever found a leak coming from the coolant pump?  My 912 has been in an unheated hangar this winter for the first time, and there is a small puddle on the floor, traced back to the small openings on the bottom of the pump at the rear of the engine.  This has never leaked when the engine is running.  Anyone seen this kind of seepage before?  Have any of you replaced this pump or the seal before?  In the maintenance manual it looks pretty difficult, and I think I would have to pull the engine (ugh!)

				Jack,

The seals on the pump shaft are gone. Go to my Europa build gallery (URL in the signature block). At the lower right of the first page is an album on the Lockwood 9xx school. Click on it. Go to the second page of the album and at the upper right is a picture of the coolant pump. Second picture down on the left is a picture of the bottom of the pump with description and commentary about the picture. Unfortunately, the school did not cover what to do about the bad seals other than say replacement of the pump or seals were necessary. I'd recommend you check with your closest Rotax shop and see what they recommend. Perhaps one of the Rotax heavy maintenance folks can provide some guidance?

				Gents,

Sorry about that, the organization of the Europa Owners web site has been changed.
Go to http://www.europaowers.org/ . From there select "Gallery 2" from the bar in the upper right. Select the 5th gallery down, N914XL and from there as per previous instructions.
Guess I'll have to change the URL in the signature block...
 Check six,

Unless you have had the Heavy maint. school you may not want to tackle the water pump seal.

Are you sure that the attachment bolt has not rotted? There was a service letter to replace the one that is in contact with the cooling fluid.

				Jack.
I had some seepage at the bottom of my water pump and replaced the small copper sealing washer on the bottom ss hex bolt (the one used to drain the pump). This seems to have stopped the leak (at least for now) This might be your problem.
Two weeks ago I attended a Rotax 912 course at Mississippi Light Aircraft and I brought up that very question about leakage at the pump. Ronnie suggested I check this ss bolt and copper washer. He also said that Rotax does allow some leakage from the weep hole. I originally thought none was allowed. Apparently it has something to do with how many drops per minute, hour? We were so busy with so much stuff that I can't recall the numbers. Before you pull your engine (and I agree with ugh) you might want to give him a call. He has been rebuilding these engines for about a thousand years and is extremely knowledgeable.
I agree with Roger that if the seals have to be done it is a heavy maintenance item
The fact that you are not getting any leakage when the engine runs and only a little when the engine sits for a while makes me think it has to do with temperature shrinkage. I often times have to give a little tweak to my radiator hose clamps when my engine sits in the cold as coolant leaks will appear.
Seems like a watchful eye is in order rather than an engine pull. Just my opinion.

I agree with Roger and the insight he gave me about replacing this seal.. My motor has sat around awhile during the building process, during the first through third start of older motor that had most items were replaced except the water pump seal (not for the weak of heart to replace). Three weeks of sitting around after last run up produced a drop of water from the weep hole and then water began to appeared daily at the water pump. After talking with two Rotax facilities they said that it was OK! Start it run it and recheck for leakage that is permissible. Whats permissible a couple of drops per day when cold and not in use ?????? Go figure, I probable did not need to replace the seal if I could accept a small leakage. I removed the seal from the front side (at the water pump) without removing from the airframe and yes I made small disposable tools and spent two days carefully removing /destroying the old seal. The seal is unlike any normal seal you will encounter. I will stop here and say you do not need impeller tool rmoval tool ( heat gun and vise grips will do) but you need the install tool of $74.00. Seal is $88.00 and water pump gasket $12.00. God help you if you need to remove everything according to the Rotax Manual $$$$.
