Yup Noel, I'm a ham. I got the capacitor the size of a beer can from an old
power supply in my junk box. Bought the 50# power supply at a ham auction
for $0.50 and have stored it for 15 years just to use one part on my Kitfox.

Anyone need a 30# 8 Volt transformer?

don't electrolytics degrade if not used for a long time?

For what it's worth, since I started this thread Wink :
- got new R/R in from lockwood yesterday, everything charges fine now with no problems.
- I'm also a ham
- I lived in Austin TX for 20 years too.
Thanks for all the help folks,

LS

Graham,

If it lost 1/2 of it's capacitance it would still have plenty. 57,000 mF

do they ever go open circuit or even short circuit? I'm not an expert in
these things, just try and remember

Graham,

An old electrolytic can be refreshed by slowly applying voltage and current
over time. Start with a variable dc power supply at a couple volts. Watch
the amps and work up to full voltage rating. As I recall it takes 5 minutes
plus 1 minute for every month the cap has set. My Kitfox III did not have a
capacitor on it and the rectifier regulator lasted 400+ hours. I have not
actually fired up the new cap but will do the refresh before I do.

Last time up i had a low voltage warning light show on the ems. low end threshold of 12v. it seemed to only appear when i keyed the radio mic and / or cycled the elec fuel pump on. took me a while to realize the correlation here. from this thread it would seem to be a blown regulator.. i have not had a chance to go in with a volt meter and check for voltage to the reg. the plane was up for almost 2 hrs in this condition. no warning light but for when using radio which is really the only draw other then the ems. seemed to be getting worse to the end of the flight so proly battery was getting down...Q= will engine continue to run with dead battery, assuming the generator fields are working? will engine run without generator but a full battery? i use a photo cell charger to keep battery topped up between flights so always had full charge to start. battery is 2 years old and only fair condition, on schedule to be replaced.
question... am i on the right track... what is the problem with the master/alternator switch off sequence... one first then the other and what happens if wrong one is switche first..?
