   I would think you'd need access to some

   pretty good machine tools and a good bit

   of patience. Not sure DIY is very cost

   effetive.

    Cool find Bill . . . these are electrically 'delicate'

    switches. Rated 1 to 50 mA. They should be used to control

    a solid-state buffered relay deck but they look pretty

    slick.

    Here's a first pass at an all solid state, two channel

    relay deck and trim speed controller for a pair of

    Ray-Allen trim actuators. It features adjustable

    rates for both pitch and roll trim, dual inputs from

    pilot and copilot stick grips, conflicting command

    lockout, 10 to 30 volt input so it can be used on both

    14 and 28v systems, AND . . . it will only load the

    trim-switch contacts very lightly . . . about 20 mA.

    The parts values are not assigned yet so don't run

    of an start buying parts. This is a preliminary look

    at one concept for integrating those $22 switches

    from Digikey into a Ray-Allen trim system.

    want a full-up system. But the added expense of

    including provisions for unneeded features is trivial.

    The builder can take an assembly like this and craft

    any one of many combinations of features.



    At first blush, it looks like it would assemble onto

    a 2.5 x 2.0 inch ECB with a 25 pin d-sub connector down

    one side.



    I need to quit 'playing' and get back on some committed

    activities. I've got a young fellow who is interested

    in learning how to lay out etched circuit boards. I'll

    email him a copy of the drawing and see if he can get

    all the parts on that size board. I know I can but

    we'll give him a something to do over the up coming

    spring break.

At a quick glance there appears to be a slight error in the circuit as

posted. (possibly a result of that 2:00AM thing?) It appears that the "up"

and "down" functions on the input switches control both the pitch and roll

circuits and the "left" and "right" functions serve no purpose?? Or am I

misreading something??

  Good eye sir! It's pretty easy to let 'big picture' items get by you while squinting at it on the screen. I printed the drawing on a nice big 11 x 17 piece of paper last night to start combing the nits and assigning part values. I found exactly what you've described and corrected it.

  You're right on track my friend. If anyone else feels motivated to sift the sands of this effort and post  their questions/findings, it would be much appreciated . . . it's always good to have several pairs of eyes looking for disconnects between design goals and the practical physics. Thanks!

Just wondering if it is practical to fail-safe a failure of the H-bridge ?

Is there a tiny fuse that could be soldered to the circuit board in  

case the H-bridge shorts out ?



What about integrating a "master disconnect" pulse from an external  

push button ?

The TC648VPA-ND (Digi-Key) or 579-TC648VPA (Mouser) can be used to control the speed of a trim motor.  Rather than controlling the speed with reduced voltage, the TC648 applies full voltage, but with a reduced duty cycle (PWM) that is set via the voltage on pin 1.

   Good question.



   The 3-terminal regulators are self-current limiting so

   a shorted h-bridge wouldn't open a fuse. Further, the

   h-bridge is so lightly loaded and protected from external

   antagonisms less than lightning strike so I think that

   worry is insignificantly small.

   If the trim system associated with this controller

   were capable of putting the crew in a high pucker-factor

   situation, it would probably be something to consider.

   But if anyone's trim system is aerodynamically risky

   if run to a stop, it's probably wise to fix the set up

   as opposed to adding a crew operated disconnect.

    Those are 2-input NAND gates, 



    (Two HIs gets you a LO, any LO gets you a HI)

   

    I use the CD4093 quad 2-input a lot in these applications.

    The part numbers for all the devices will be included on

    the final iteration.

 I've been trying to figure out a way to add on-limit timer to the

 previous iteration of the circuit but with a minimum of added parts.

 Here's one pass at it:



 There were three, 'left over' gates in the CD4093 devices which

 I've combined with a capacitor, transistor, resistor and diode

 to sense the presence of any input command. This starts a timer

 set with the RC time constant of the resistor and capacitor

 which will drive the gate of the transistor HI after n-seconds.



 The transistor pulls down on the power supply's adjust node and

 reduces voltage to the trim system to 1.25 volts. If the

 motor will definitely not run at any speed under any load at

 this voltage, then this shutdown philosophy would work.



 Anybody got a Ray-Allen actuator laying around? Hook an

 AA cell to the white leads and tell us what you see. The

 next best alternative takes 1 more gate and a few more

 jelly-bean parts . . . but it goes in series with the command

 leads to the h-bridge.
