Anyone fitted the Dynon Pitot/AOA sensor? The instructions recommend
fitting it up to 12 inches behind the leading edge. As it does not have
a static port I plan to continue using the Europa pitot/static (for a
back up ASI) and as a common static source.
The Europa pitot/static is 12 inches behind the spar so quite a ways
back from Dynons suggestion.
Any problems utilizing the same area next to the Europa pitot/static
tubes for the Dynon pitot/AOA do you think. I want to run the pitot/AOA
lines along the same path.
If anyone has experience of this location I would like to hear. It
probably doesn;t matter for the pitot part - just wasn't sure if the AOA
was critical of position.

Hi Fred,
I haven't purchased anything yet, but I guess there is no harm in asking. Just thought someone might have first hand experience.

I was about to post a similar post myself. The Dynon AoA/pitot is already fitted to many aircraft but there is no Europa specific Mod which has been accepted by the LAA. I realise this is not required outside the UK but the acceptance process considers all of the aerodynamic, structural and performance issues and therefore is a good place for others to start.
I have already advised an owner that the Dynon recommendation for the position of the AoA probe/pitot may not be best for the Europa. The existing pitot/static is >50% aft chord and has around 7in offset from the lower aerofoil surface. As there is an existing facility to attach the standard pitot/probe and access the static lines l figure this may be a good place to install the Dynon.
The function/calibration as an AoA needs to be assessed. It is not intended to be the primary means of stall warning, it being a backup to the stall strip or buzzer already mandated by the LAA.
If there are any Europa owners/operators on the forum who currently have the Dynon AoA/pitot system installed can they please send me an email (to john.wighton (at) ecoflight.co.uk). This is especially the case for UK based operators (or other nations who use LAA Engineering approvals as a baseline) as they are most likely operating with unapproved equipment. All communications will be treated as confidential)
Another challenge is to get the required power out to the heated pitot. This is relevant for Europa owners who are considering adapting their aircraft for UK IFR operation under the LAA scheme.
The static port locations could be as standard (as Martin is proposing) - l understand that Andy Draper has recommended twin fuselage mounted ports on another Europa which will use the Dynon pitot/AoA. The location of these is not yet proven, although Andy has significant experience with Europas and may have seen a similar installation that worked successfully.
Depending on the response to this request l should be able to share relevant technical data with Martin in the USA.

I am looking at adding heating to the end of a standard europa pitot pipe from aircraft spruce. Either using the positive temperature coeffient PTC resistors as proposed/built by Eric M Jones for his glastar or using power resistors around the tube end and a thermistor/silicon sensor based drive to heat when its around zero. This way could make pitot heating viable on a standard 912S alternator. It could be sufficiently light as to make no difference to the mounting method.

Hi all,
I took delivery of my Dynon heated pitot/AOA probe today. I'm aiming to replace the existing pitot with this one. As Dynon says the tip of the probe can be anywhere from 2-12 inches from the leading edge, approx 6 inches below the wing surface and half way along the wing, I think this location will be OK. I'll measure it tomorrow.
As I have a classic wing the next challenge will be fitting the probe and the wiring. I'll give Andy Draper a call too to get his advice, but hopefully I can use the existing mounting and modify the mounting tube I also got from Dynon.
I have just finished adding my cabin lighting (red dimable LED), so the heated pitot should be the final bit of kit I need before I'm ready to apply for the removal of the VFR restriction. Wish me luck as I may be first-of-type.
All the best.
Carl

Hi All,
I thought I'd give you an update on my progress with the mod to fit a Dynon heated pitot/AOA probe.
I've discussed the fitting today with Andy Draper and he's given me a valuable suggestion on how to secure it. I'm drawing-up the Mod 2 and 3 as I type. He raised no major concerns and was very supportive. I'll let you know how I get on.

Very neat.
Out of interest how much current is actually drawn by the Pitot and did you need to add an additional alternator?

It can pull up to 10 Amps, but it is fitted with a thermostat so it only pulls that in the most demanding conditions. However, my current battery appears to be on its death bed (over six years old) so it's not up to the job at the moment. I've just ordered a replacement, so we'll see how it copes when I get it fitted. I'll report back.

How did you fix it to the wing?

I drilled two holes in the pitot post's base that aligned with the existng holes from the standard pitot.

Hi Will,
Yes I am very interested,as I have also fitted my AOA the same as you. I hesitated to post about it here, as my aircraft has not yet flown, but your post have given me confidence that it should be OK. I have submitted and am awaiting approval of a MOD for this method of attachment in the UK. I had originally attached the probe to the perspex cover, but the LAA requested I use an metal cover.

I used a fiberglass cover and made a layup "mast". The tas vs indicated is spot on so you shouldn't have an issue.

Wil, please do send me photos, or post them here.
Martin, I was fortunate in that the original builder had run plastic conduit through the wing, with wiring for navigation lights, that I don't need, so I cut into this conduit ( as can be seen in the photo), and run 4mm pneumatic tubing through this. You can also see I converted this tubing back to 6mm to fit the AOA probe.
