In the Sonex the fuel tank is in the cockpit and directly behind the instrument panel. There is minimal space on the back side of the firewall. Is there any issue with mounting the "forest of tabs" behind the panel and then running a single wire to a grounding point on the cockpit side of the firewall?

If this is feasible, how would I go about sizing said ground wire?

Use a ground wire that is the same size as the positive wire that connects
to the main power bus. An option is to run the ground wire between the
the forest of tabs and battery negative terminal or to wherever the battery
 negative connects to the airframe.

What kind of structure would be 'home' for the
ground block? Where is the battery installed
and how does the factory recommend ground it?

Given the simplicity of this airplane, I'm not sure
the big forest of tabs product is needed/appropriate
    for your project.

For an airplane like a Sonex, perhaps a ground
system like this is more appropriate? You're
not going to have any high current, noisy loads.
Remotely located accessories using local airframe grounds
will still be serviced. Single point ground
for avionics is easily managed with the simpler,
lighter avionics ground techniques discussed on
the website and here on the List.

Thanks, Bob. I'll check out that diagram. |
if you'd like to do panel grounds using a d-sub
ground bus, I might have enough resitual inventory
around to craft one for you.
