On the 601XL, with the NACA fresh air intakes installed where ZAC shows them, a duct would have to be severely contorted to get to outlets mounted directly on the instrument panel. Mounting the outlets below the panel, next to the sidewall will definitely intrude on my knee space. Yes, with my keen 20-20 hindsight, I know I should have mounted the scoops above where ZAC shows them, but at this point, I can't replace the side skins. Has anyone mounted the outlets directly on the outlet of the plastic intake shroud? It would probably require a mounting plate, fastened to that adjacent vertical angle (the one that is curved at the lower end). Is that feasible? If it is, which outlet model would work best?

I take it things are so tight that you can't reach the panel with a tight
S-bend?
Can you reach the end of the NACA duct to adjust a vent mounted there when
in flight?
Anyway Aircraft Spruce has an adapter (p/n 13-00833) which bolts to the back
of any vent and gives you a 2 inch diameter flange. You should be able to
couple this directly to the 2 inch outlet of the NACA duct. It is the second
item from the top in the left column on this catalog page:
www.aircraftspruce.com/pdf/2007Individual/Cat07190.pdf
The vent just below it (p/n 05-00779) would work nicely with it without
having a corner to catch your leg.

Craig, I have ordered the vents from Aircraft Spruce. Didn't order the adapter. When I get the vents, I'll see what it takes to install them directly to the NACA duct.
Thanks for the reply and info. - Jay

I saw some eyeball vents at www.steinair.com 1.5 in $90.00 and 2.0 in $100.00. They are in the Minneapolis area.

I placed the fresh air outlets on my panel using eyeball vents with adapters
(from Aircraft Spruce) to pick up SCAT tubing from the NACA outlets placed
in the dwg location. No problem, except vents use up panel space. See
http://www.zenithair.com/zodiac/6-photo79.html picture
http://www.zenithair.com/zodiac/pic05/493tg3.jpg
The headset jack locations below the panel in the corners directly below the
vents can sometimes be a problem. I relocated the pickups further forward
for a little more room.

I used the following vent system from Vans:
http://www.vansaircraft.com/cgi-bin/catalog.cgi?ident=1164084586-262-300&browse=heatvent&product=ventilation-components
VENT SV-COMBO X2
It was fairly cheap, and worked fine.

That SV-1 NACA vent is pretty much exactly what Zenith shipped with my kit.

The vent system that you used is the same one that came with my RV kit. They were great in the summer, they will blow the chart out of your hand when they are open. In the winter they don't work so great. They won't close all the air off. I replaced the "eyeball" with machined aluminum vents I got from Affordable Panels. I like these. When they are closed they are firmly closed. No air flow at all. Downside-they were terribly expensive.

Carroll,
Did you seal the eyeball vents with silicon? I have not done it yet, but the documentation supplied with the system gave a pretty clear explanation on how to do it. Living in San Diego, I don't worry about it much...

Yes they were sealed with silicone. But I couldn't get them to stay sealed. After a few weeks the silicone would flake off and would have to be re-applied. You are probably right about being in San Diego, but Tennessee in January with an OAT around 10 degrees or less it doesn't take much of an air leak to put goose bumps on your skin. I have a friend in the Chicago area who takes the hoses off of his NACA ducts in the winter and tapes them shut.
He says he may be the first person in history to use duct tape to tape ducts.

VR and Carroll,
I have used Proseal, Silicone tends to dry7 out in the Florida heat and crack. In fact Proseal is the only thing holding the vent in place.
